| I consider myself the "unofficial"
winner of the Mardi Gras costume contest. I mostly wore body paint which my brother George had to help me apply. Actually, I arrived too late and missed the judging, but several other participants remarked, "You would have won", as they were leaving. See a write-up about my costume in the Lafayette newspaper! Chicago friends, yes this costume is recycled from several Halloween's ago. Lafayette friends, someone thought that I must be Alpha Phi Alpha. Click these thumbnails to get a clearer view. |

Traditional Mardi Gras Music Selection:
"The Second Line" To "second line" is to march/dance in a certain fashion during a Mardi Gras parade, or at a jazz funeral. If you're actually a part of the parade, you're the first line; if you're just drunk and dancing behind it, you're in the second line. First line music is somber; second line is raucous. Indeed, the march and this song are synonymous, and go back decades. The second line umbrella was born of a necessity to try to keep as cool as one could, and stay out of the sun's heat and light. This use of the umbrella continues today as it was more than a hundred years ago. |
